Uncertain Fears

Dionaea walked the streets, careful where she walked. This was a dangerous sector for someone like her...she never knew what would be down the next alley. "Father...I'm being brave..." She hugged her laptop like it was a life raft, capable of protecting her from the dangers of the world.

Soon she would reach the end of the town. From that point on, she'd have to go about another mile, into the wild. An old woman, scarred by life and old age told her if she would venture into the forests, she would most likely not return. Evil housed there, so she claimed. "If you go there, you will find your personal most feared evil. It will haunt you and eventually consume you. You cannot escape it. The Umbrians have stained that land. Stay away from it child." She'd vanished as soon as she'd come in the crowds, leaving Dionaea alone once more.

She looked around. She looked down at her feet. "My most feared evil..." She looked ahead. "...what did she mean by that?" She pressed on, assuring herself that she'd be okay. "Father..."

Animals scurried away as she neared them, a deer jumping away into the deep darkness of the forest, birds silent as the grave and the thick roof of leaves letting through barely any sunlight. There wasn't much vegetation near the ground, after all, there was practically no sunlight that could keep them alive. A damp thick air surrounded her as she went on. After more or less a mile, the pc started to beep radically, like a metal detector near a bunker. From a distance, walls covered in green were barely visible, or rather, barely standing. Ruins, from what it seemed.

She gulped, and followed the sounds emanating from her laptop. What could possibly live here? This wasn't somewhere her employer would dare be...she was afraid. "F-father..." She barely squeaked out that word as she entered the ruin.

The air was thick and moist, and the damp stairs were slippery under her feet. A faint feeling of horrid death lingered, as if many had died here and never were remembered or properly buried. It had the same feeling as a battlefield or a massgrave. The stairs lead down into a hallway, not a single bit of light, except for the illuminating screen of Dionaea's laptop and the consistent flashing of the red light. The laptop stopped beeping, but the sound didn't dissipate. It seemed to be coming from somewhere deep inside the ruins. Closeby hang a map of the building that once stood here. As it seemed, after wiping it clean from moss dirt and other substances, that this once was a building, quite large, with 5 floors above the ground, and 3 below, of which one seemed at the size of an airplane hangar bay. The sound came from far, and seen there was nothing above her but trees and air, the only logical place for it to be coming from was below.

She closed the laptop, trying to shut it off, and walked around looking for a staircase downwards. "..." She was shaking noticeably now. She found the staircase, and made her way down it.

As she climbed down, the sound became louder. It was some sort of a beacon, it seemed. The first floor underground was seemingly quiet. Here and there a lamp actually still flickered, indicating there was still power around. The second floor seemed to miss most of the ground. There were massive holes everywhere and entire walls missing. As Dionaea arrived at the staircase on the third floor underground, she found herself in a huge hangar bay, trees, broken or growing everywhere, destroyed equipment and the smell of rotting piercing through her like needles. Right in front of her lay what seemed to be the remains of a once scientist. The only thing that could give it away was the scorched labcoat and a panel of some sort. The metal staircase was like any you'd find in a large compartment. The ground was a good deal away. The sound of the beacon resonated loudly through the whole hangar and it took a while before it revealed itself that underneath a large engine of some sort, there was a blue light flashing on and off, at the same rhythm as the laptop did before.

In the dark, the little blue light blinked consistently under the large engine like machinery. It seemed to have been around there for a long time, because nothing appeared to have moved for the past couple hundred years.

The closer she got, the clearer the flashing light became. Up until she was standing practically a couple yards away from it. It wasn't until she turned the laptop screen around, to use it as a flashlight that she recognized what she had found. A head, at the size of more or less her entire body, lied in front of her, the rest of its body, if it had any, under the engine like debris. It seemed to be gold and white colored, or so it was originally meant to be. Where supposedly its chest would be, the blue light was still flashing, then stopped after 4 more times.

"Wh-who led me here?" She looked around, half-hoping, half dreading, to find someone.

The only thing around was the machine in front of her, whether it ran out of power of never worked. But it lay there, the green eyes not indicating where they were pointed and seeming huge, like a giant.

Not seeing anything but the figure, she gingerly touched it. "Y-you brought me here?" She chuckled softly. She was loosing it...talking to an inanimate object...she was crazy.

At the touch of her hand against the cold metal, the eyes lit up ever so faintly. Some of the power she created in her fear had transferred to it.

She recoiled, shocked that the lights lit up.

Despite the fact that they had only faded up slightly, it had still been noticeable. The machine had gotten, small as it was, a bit of electricity from Dionaea's ability. There was a chance, if given enough, it would restart. But even then, it would have to be helped to be dug out of the ruins. It never got out initially by itself.

She looked around. "D-did I do it?" She touched it again, her heart racing, generating more electricity.

Slowly the eyes lit up in a gloomy shade of green, barely able to maintain the power given. It was like running water through ancient pipelines. Everything was rusty and had to be cleaned properly, as well as stuck in the mud and roots.

"I-I'm the one..." She looked around, her heart still racing. "Wh-what is this?" She hurried around the room, looking for a light switch of some sort.

Considering the main powersource had blown up a good 200 years ago, at that very spot, there wasn't much useful left to use. Despite that 2 lamps on the second floor below ground did work.

"W-well...I g-guess I have t-to power it..." She set the laptop down in a safe spot, and walked over to it, placing both hands on it, getting ready.

The unit had been running on the lowest amount of power for a long time. It wouldn't survive a full charge, or at least the more delicate or circuits wouldn't. The largest part of the unit was buried under the large amount of scrap metal. At least the part of an arm and its head were visible from Dionaea's point of view.

Dionaea relaxed, trying to lower her fear, so she wouldn't accidentally drain herself...then released a good amount of electricity into the object.
